"Understanding Ultra-Processed Foods: A Practical Guide to Healthier Eating"

Living in a world where around 60% of the average diet in the UK and the USA consists of ultra-processed foods (UPF), it's crucial to grasp the impact these foods have on our health. Ultra-processed foods, having undergone extensive processing, come loaded with additives like emulsifiers, preservatives, and artificial flavors. The widespread consumption of such foods in our daily lives raises concerns, given their connection to various health issues.

Dr. van Tulleken, the author of 'Ultra-Processed People,' sheds light on the unseen consequences of UPF. Numerous studies, according to him, have established a link between UPF and various health complications, notably cardiovascular diseases. A recent study highlighted that a high intake of UPF escalates the risk of developing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), liver fibrosis/cirrhosis, and severe liver disease. The study also revealed that increased UPF consumption leads to elevated levels of certain clinical biomarkers, emphasizing the urgent need to cut back on UPF for better liver health.
